St Mary of Charity Primary School Empowered to succeed

Values

Topic Overview

Our Topic in Terms 1 and 2 is ‘Adventurers’, where we will be looking at real-life explorers, such as Earnest Shackleton, to fictional adventurers like Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter in ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. We will also be focusing geography, particularly mountains, seas and oceans around the world. But ultimately, given our topic, we hope to have our own (perhaps more local) adventures!

In Science we are focusing on the human body and our senses. As well as our usual practical lessons, children will learn the skill of planning investigations, and hopefully use their knowledge of ‘senses’ to feed their descriptive writing in English.

PE will be on Tuesday (swimming) and Friday (netball) in Term 1 and then Thursday (gymnastics) and Friday (football) in Term 2. Please ensure children have suitable PE kits and footwear on those days, for indoor and outdoor conditions.

Homework will be handed out every Monday (Maths) and Friday (SPaG) and should be returned every Wednesday and Monday respectively. Mrs Lanceley also sets her own times table homework every Tuesday, which is due in the following week. Lastly, there will be one termly homework project linked to our topic, which will be due the last week of term. Children will be given some ideas, but are free to do whatever they like. However, I do recommend any budding bakers to go down that route…!

With regards to Reading, your child should have received their school book and journal. We expect children to read a minimum of 20 minutes a night in Year 5. Please ensure you sign your child’s journal each day to confirm this has been completed.

Any questions, ask myself or Mrs Horsford. Thanks!
