PSHE/RSE Intent Statement

At St Mary of Charity Primary School, we value PSHE and RSE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning within the special context of our school and then in the wider community. Across the school, through carefully structured and progressive lessons and activities, children are able to express their thoughts and feelings in a way that is safe and appropriate. At SMC, we believe that in a developing world, filled with opportunity but also challenges and risks, children need to know how to be safe and healthy, and understand how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.

Implementation

Curriculum Design and Sequencing

At St Mary of Primary School our PSHE curriculum is carefully designed and sequenced to meet the needs of all our pupils. We use the 'Jigsaw' program to teach the Curriculum.

Jigsaw is split into six areas:

* Being Me In My World

* Celebrating Differences

* Dreams and Goals

* Healthy Me

* Relationships

* Changing Me

Each theme is explored across the key stages, with content and teaching strategies tailored to the age and maturity of our pupils. The curriculum is mapped to ensure continuous progression and to reinforce prior learning. We also ensure that PSHE education is well-integrated with other subjects and school activities to provide meaningful and relevant connections. At our school, PSHE has a close relationship with Well Being and Mental Health projects that run across the school.

Whole-School Approach

PSHE is embedded within our whole-school values led approach, promoting a positive and inclusive ethos that supports the well-being of every member of our school community. Our dedicated PSHE lead, supported by senior leadership, ensures that the subject remains a priority and that best practices are followed.

Specialist Teaching and Resources

Staff have access to regular training and development programs to ensure they remain up-to-date on the latest research, statutory requirements, and best practices in PSHE education. We invest in a wide range of up-to-date resources that cater to our diverse student body and support effective teaching and learning..

Consultation and Collaboration

We actively engage students, parents, carers and the wider community in shaping our PSHE curriculum. We value their input and strive to make it relevant and reflective of their needs, backgrounds, and cultural diversity. Regular consultations and collaborations with external agencies and professionals further enrich the curriculum and ensure that our pupils have access to the most current and accurate information.

The Impact

The impact of Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is assessed through a variety of methods, including data analysis, book scrutiny, and pupil voice initiatives. By engaging with these assessment strategies, educators can closely monitor the effectiveness of the PSHE curriculum and make the necessary adjustments to enhance its delivery.

The overarching impact of PSHE on children is multifaceted, fostering essential elements such as trust, autonomy, and teamwork. As students navigate the complexities of personal and social development, they are encouraged to cultivate a range of skills that are not only vital for their growth within the school environment but are equally important for their active participation in the wider community. Through structured PSHE activities, children learn to collaborate effectively with their peers, which ultimately prepares them for future social interactions and collective endeavours.

Furthermore, PSHE education equips children with the knowledge required to lead a healthy and safe lifestyle. It empowers them with the confidence and self-esteem necessary to articulate their own views and opinions. Importantly, this curriculum also instils in students a sense of consideration and respect for the perspectives of others, fostering an inclusive environment that values diverse viewpoints.

By nurturing these capabilities, PSHE plays a pivotal role in shaping responsible, engaged, and empathetic citizens. As children progress through their educational journey, the skills and knowledge gained through PSHE will enable them to make positive contributions not only within their immediate educational settings but also within the broader community. This holistic approach to education is indispensable for the development of well-rounded individuals who can thrive in both personal and communal contexts, thus enhancing the social fabric of our society.
